How much data does Spotify use? It depends on the sound quality you choose. The higher it is, the more data the streaming service will burn through. In any case, Spotify uses way less data than video streaming services (more on this later) and probably less than most people think.
The Spotify Android app lets you choose between five sound quality settings: Low (24kbps), Normal (96kbps), High (160kbps), Very high (320kbps), and Automatic (dependent on your network connection). You can access these options by heading to Settings > Music Quality on your Android phone.
Don’t miss: After a week with YouTube Music, my heart is still with Spotify
To simplify things as much as possible, I’ve prepared an overview of how much data each setting uses per minute and hour as well as how long you’d have to stream music for to burn through 1GB of data. Keep in mind these numbers are approximate. Spotify can cache songs you’ve previously listened to, meaning they may not eat up the same amount of data the second time you play them.
Low (24kbps):
How Does Spotify Download Work
- Per minute: 0.18MB
- Per hour: 10.8MB
- How long until you reach 1GB: 92.5 hours
Normal (96kbps):
- Per minute: 0.72MB
- Per hour: 43.2MB
- How long until you reach 1GB: 23.1 hours
High (160kbps):
- Per minute: 1.2MB
- Per hour: 72MB
- How long until you reach 1GB: 13.8 hours
Very high (320kbps):
- Per minute: 2.4MB
- Per hour: 144MB
- How long until you reach 1GB: 6.9 hours
Now that you know how much data Spotify uses, let’s see how the numbers compare to video streaming. Watching HD content on Netflix uses up to 3GB of data per hour or as much as 7GB when the resolution gets bumped up to Ultra HD. Medium quality (SD) is a lot less data hungry, burning through 0.7GB per hour. Still, that’s almost five times as much as streaming music with the best sound quality available (320kbps).
Apple Music vs Spotify vs Google Play Music
What about Spotify’s competitors? Google Play Music and Deezer both offer a maximum audio bitrate of 320kbps, which uses approximately 144MB of data per hour. So does Tidal, although it also has a Hi-Fi plan with a bitrate of 1.411kbps for improved sound quality. It’s a lot more data hungry, using around 635MB per hour. Apple Music, on the other hand, has a maximum bitrate of 256kbps, which translates to around 115MB of data per hour.
An important thing to keep in mind is that Spotify — as well as other streaming services mentioned in this post — lets you download songs to your phone, which means you don’t have to use any data at all when listening to music.

How much Data Does Spotify use?
You already know about Spotify app, that provides online music. Yes, it is a music streaming app. If you want an answer for does Spotify use data? then the answer is Big yes. Because online streaming is provided to you through the internet, So the some of your data either mobile or wi-fi will be used by the Spotify app. But the question is how much data does it use? So I will say it depends upon many factor like music quality, how much music you are listening and etc. There are many of my friends asked me that how much data does Spotify use per song. If you question is same then the answer is “It depends upon song that you have listened through Spotify app”
So to get the exact usage of data by Spotify we need to get some calculation. Before calculating spotify data usage, I want to point out that Spotify provides songs in 3 different qualities, that are
- 96 kbps
- 160 kbps
- 320kbps
The last one 320kbps that is higher quality provided by the spotify app, but it is available only for the premium paid users. Now calculate how much data does spotify use for listening a song.

Approx Data usage by Spotify:
Suppose you are listening to a song of 3 minutes in 160kbps quality. So here 160kbps denotes that Spotify will kill 160kb per second.
160kb*60second=9600kb per minute. That mean it will kill 9600kb per minute. If the song is one minute then your 9600kb data will be used by the spotify.
So data usage by Spotify totally depends upon the song quality and also on the length of that song. Therefore, by using above calculation you can easily calculate how much data will be use by Spotify per minute, per song and also per month.
For a month, data usage of Spotify. Just consider how many song you listen in a day and secondly take an average minute of the single song. After considering these both you can simply calculate the total listening minute in a month. Then according to the song quality, you can find out approximate data usage by Spotify in a month.
For example, let’s suppose you daily listen to a single song through the Spotify app. Now let’s suppose the average time of a single song is 2 Minutes.
Total minutes in a month = 30 *2 = 60 minutes.
Now find out how many seconds in 60 minutes. That is 60*60=360seconds.
So you have totally listen 360 seconds in a month. Now the data usage by Spotify in a month can be calculate according to the quality of songs. If you have go through 160kbps quality then
360*160 = 57600KB in a month. You can convert this KB into MB easily. Just divide KB by 1024.
57600/1024 = 57MB approx.
If you are going with higher quality songs then the data use will be increase it is obvious.
